Off-Grid Solar Installation, Greendown Shepherd Huts

What the client wanted

Greendown Shepherd Huts build and hire out shepherd huts on rural land. Getting mains power to each hut wasn't practical, so they needed a reliable off-grid power solution that could be installed wherever a hut was placed. The curved roofs of the huts also made mounting panels directly on them difficult, and they needed the flexibility to position panels for the best sun exposure regardless of where the hut was facing.

What we did

Rather than building fixed frames, we used a ballast mounting system. Panels are clipped into weighted plastic buckets filled with sand and breeze blocks, which means they can be positioned anywhere on the ground to optimise for the sun without any fixings into the hut or the land. It's a simple system that's easy to reposition if needed.

Each hut got its own fully independent off-grid solar setup. We also wired up the incinerator toilets into each system as part of the wider off-grid installation. The incinerators run on gas but need an electrical connection to operate, so everything ties into the same off-grid supply.

Outcome

Every hut runs completely independently with its own off-grid power supply. Greendown can place huts anywhere, and each one works straight away with no connection to the mains required.
